Miami, July 13, 2004
The Lawton Human Rights Foundation is making this emergency press
release in order to inform the world of the precarious situation that
Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet is currently in. Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet is a
Cuban prisoner of conscience who has been condemned to prison for 25
years for the mere act of proclaiming and defending Human Rights in for
the citizens of Cuba.
Dr. Oscar Biscet’s wife, Elsa Morejón has communicated to us from
Havana, Cuba, the following acts that presently threaten the life of Dr.
Biscet:
1. Dr. Biscet has been transferred to “isolation”
2. Family visitation rights (for wife, mother and father) which are
authorized by the “penitentiary” authorities every 3 months for 2 hours
and 2 persons have been suspended until further notice.
3. Matrimonial visits authorized every 5 months have also been
suspended.
4. Food allowances brought by the family members, that are authorized by
the penitentiary authority, are no longer being given to Dr. Biscet.
5. The medical condition of Dr. Biscet continues to deteriorate rapidly,
and as a result:
a. Loss of over 6o pounds in the last few months
b. Development of chronic arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolemia
c. Gastritis exacerbated due to the lack of food and medicine
d. Hemorrhoids
e. Gingivitis due to the severe risk factors and conditions found in the
isolation wards
The Lawton foundation appreciates the act of solidarity demonstrated by
the International Society for Human Rights which is based in Frankfurt,
Germany, the “Movimiento Cubano Unidad Democrática” and also all those
persons of good will.
By means of this release we ask that all the citizens of the world
demand of their governments to intercede and ask the Cuban government
for a quick resolution to the current situation of Dr. Oscar Elías
Biscet and to demand for the immediate release of all Cuban political
prisoners.
Thanks
The Lawton Human Rights Foundation
